Addiction is a chronic illness that causes a person to take drugs, despite knowing its dangerous side effects. The brains of students who are usually in their teens are developing continuously, therefore their risk for addiction is comparatively greater than adults.

The dangers that face students who use drugs are multiple. Several factors attribute the high rate of drug addiction among students, such as:

  • Stress: Students, in their college life, are facing lots of stress due to social obligations, internships, part-time jobs, and difficult coursework, thus many students turn to drugs, as a solution to cope this stress
  • Curiosity: High school and college students are discovering several new aspects of their lives in professional and personal realms. This curiosity is one of the reasons behind drug addiction.
  • Peer Pressure: When there is lots of pressure and competition, students opt for drugs to enhance their performance.

Most of the students use drugs to increase stamina and to improve concentration to study better. Some of the common drugs used for this purpose include Vyvanse, Focalin, Concerta, Ritalin, and Adderall. These drugs aids to improve cognitive functions, however, have so many negative consequences which the student may experience with time. Here is a list of dangers facing students who use drugs.

  • Hormone release that results in sudden changes in brain chemistry and extreme mood swings. Some students may even experience robotic emotions and fluxing moods
  • Heart palpitations in the beginning and higher risk of a heart attack after regular use of these drugs
  • Digestive problems, such as constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea are common.
  • Some students may experience headache, fatigue, and dizziness
  • Panic attacks, nervousness, and anxiety are also common dangers that facing students who use drugs
  • Irregular sleep schedules and poor sleep.
